Going to open houses are a great way to look at homes without feeling pressured to buy by a real estate agent. Many people go to open homes for fun, for decorating ideas, or just to get an idea of what home prices are like their area. No matter why are going to an open house keep in mind that the houses that you are looking at might just be the house of your dreams. Therefore there are some things to consider.
Nearly everything about a home can be changed except the location. When people say that location is everything they are not kidding. There is a reason that houses on the beach are worth millions. The closer you are to a desirable location the more expensive a home is going to be. Location is more than just a good area though. There are other location factors to consider. If you are situation next to a hospital and can hear sirens, or the neighbors have a pig farm, these are all reasons to not buy the home.
While location cannot be changed, there are some things that are a deal breaker as well. The fact is that some homes need so much work that the investment is not worth it. If you are looking at a home that has roof issues, foundation issues, pluming and electrical issues, then you might want to step away. If the configuration of the home is so bizarre that you cannot figure out which room is what, then that should be a red flag.
You also need to remember that there are things that can be changed. If the only reason that you don’t like a home is because it has pink carpet, remember that carpet is relatively easy and cheap to install. If the backyard does not have grass, that can always be put in. Remember that not everyone has the same tastes and you will have to spend some time and money making any home yours.
